Oil Spill at Walvis Bay Shore
An oil spill was reported at Afrodite Beach North of Walvis
Bay. Small scale oil spills are fairly common in the area due to the large
amounts of marine vessels and the possibility for leaks. While the spill was
considered to be largely minor and localized, it was still large enough to
cause alarm.
Investigations are still ongoing to find the source of the
spill. Officials suspect the source of the spill may be an old vessel which had
been impounded by the Namibian Port Authority. The vessel has been anchored in
the impound for many days.
Birds covered in oil have already been spotted in the area.
However as of now they have avoided capture and have could not be helped. The
true burden of the spill on the wildlife community has yet to be determined.

Do you know if there is any formal system for the government to seek repayment from those responsible for the oil spill?
