Like in
many other African nations, football is the most popular sport in Namibia.
Founded immediately after Namibia gained independence in 1990, the Namibia
Football Association (NFA) is the governing body of the sport in Namibia. The organization
has stated that its overall goal is to provide a cohesive force in Namibian society.
This goal is especially important considering Namibia’s large cultural
diversity.
The NFA also organizes a national football team,
nicknamed the Brave Warriors. Though
the team has never qualified for the FIFA world cup, they have made two appearances
in the Africa Cup of Nation’s. Despite the importance of football in Namibia,
the country’s limited resources mean that its football team leaves much to be
desired. The team is currently ranked 111th by FIFA and has never won
a competitive match in any major tournament.
Despite
these setbacks with its national team however, the NFA is a positive force in
Namibia, organizing programs that help promote tolerance, sportsmanship, and
fairness among Namibia’s youth, as well as organizing several domestic teams
that serve as rallying points for local pride.
