Namibia Reports First Listeriosis Case After South African
Outbreak
On Tuesday March 13th, Namibia reported the first
case of listeriosis. Listeriosis is an infection caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. The disease is
contracted from the consumption of infected food. Symptoms can result in
flu-like symptoms, infection of the bloodstream and potentially fatal infection
of the brain.
A recent outbreak in South Africa began last year infecting
more than 900 people and has killing 183 people so far. It is believed to be
one of the largest outbreaks worldwide. In response of the outbreak, Namibia
has banned the import of processed meats and Namibians have been warned not to
eat any items imported from there. The start of the South Africa outbreak has
been traced to a food factory owned by Tiger Brands.
