Earthquake in Namibia

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Namibia at 10:32am local time on March 14, 2018. The epicenter was 65 km northwest of Khorixas, a community of around 13,500 people. There were no reports of damage or injuries immediately following the earthquake. The epicenter fell on the Kaoko orogenic belt which is known to be seismically active (though quakes are infrequent). Reports say that five buildings/houses were damaged and one destroyed.

Growing up in California, I’m fairly used to the idea that an earthquake could strike at any time. Seismic activity is an important part of Earth’s history and of the development on the planet and ecosystems that we see today. However scary earthquakes are, we cannot separate them from the broader geologic forces that shaped the world we know.
