The first ever Windhoek Fashion Week took place in November 2016 and showcased three local Namibian designers as well as two international guest designers. After many failed attempts to organize the event in years past, Fashion Week helped to promote the creations of artists, models, and designers. The collections included sports casual wear, Earth-themed clothing pieces, a men’s lingerie collection, a clothing line called ‘Waterfall’, seasonal collections, and more.
Loux the Vintage Guru is a Namibian designer whose ‘hipster’ style is very popular in many countries throughout Africa. He mixes more traditional prints with vintage Western clothing to emphasize cultural heritage and to modernize stereotypes about African fashion and creativity. Through his designs and advocacy, Loux hopes to change the perception of Africans within and beyond the industry of fashion.

Two Herero women in formal dress |
The Herero people of Namibia are known for a unique colorful Victorian style of dress. This is interesting because the Herero style is a play on German fashion during the time of the Herero wars which left many Herero murdered, enslaved, and traumatized at the hands of their oppressors. The choice to dress like Victorian Germans is a way to express the Herero’s history and their emancipation.
