Benedict Allen in the Skeleton Coast
Benedict Allen is an explorer. He has crossed the most remote rainforests, the driest deserts, and other lesser-known regions of the world. With every expedition, lasting for months at a time, Benedict documents his journey through words and photographs.
One of his most well-known expeditions was crossing the Skeleton Coast of Namibia with nothing but three camels (it took him three weeks alone to train himself to mount his camels). He began this expedition at the southern tip of the Skeleton Coast at the deserted mining-town of Oranjemund, and three months later, ended up near Namibia's northern-most coast town of Foz do Cunene. Looking at a map of his voyage, he basically walked and rode his camels up the entire coast of Namibia, from South Africa to Angola. Benedict encountered countless obstacles, all documented in one of Bob's book, The Skeleton Coast, and the accompanying BBC TV series. I encourage you guys to check out either of these, the images are stunning and the tales are mesmerizing!

So interesting! Have you read this book or seen some of the series? What would you say is the most stunning thing we should expect to see in the Skeleton Coast?

I wonder what made him choose this particular adventure. What kind of obstacles did he encounter? -Mini
ReplyDelete@Michelle I have looked through the book, but couldn't find the tv series anywhere online. Bob suggested to talk with a librarian to find the tv series. In my opinion, I think the most stunning thing will be seeing dunes and the desert immediately merge with the ocean. This is something that one doesn't usually expect out of a coastline.

@Mini One of his largest obstacles was as he moved north in cheetah territory, his camels became very anxious and uneasy, and he had to navigate the territory without being hunted down. Check out the book if you want to know more!

This sounds similar to a trek made by Robyn Davidson, who traveled via camel across the Australian outback. - Hayden
ReplyDeleteI'm confused-- did he do this alone, or was it with the support of a camera crew? Either way what an awesome trip.
