Namibian Politics for Dummies

One of the most impactful forces on a country's environment is the presiding government of the region. Namibia's political scene is especially interesting since its independence was not declared until March 1990. Major leaders include Dr. Hage Gottfried Geingob, who was voted into the president's office in November 2014. As defined by the constitution, the President is restricted to two five-year terms, although Dr. Geingbob previously served as Prime Minister of the country.

A National Assembly of 72 elected members, each of which serve a maximum of five years, is responsible for legislation. This body has the power to impeach the President, while the President has the power to dissolve the assembly.
The current president belongs to the South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), the party that secured about 87% of the votes in the last election year. Originally a liberation movement, SWAPO has been the dominant political party of the country since it first established independence, although it has faced numerous human rights abuses against suspected spies during the nation's fight for freedom.

Another member of SWAPO, Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, was made prime minister of the nation in 2015.

  1. Is Namibia divided into districts or counties or states or anything like that, and do the elected representatives to the National Assembly come from all different regions? Is the number 72 population based?
